Three Years In: What Mount Pleasant Taught Us About Pilates
Evolve Modern Pilates opened in October 2023 on Old Georgetown Road in Mount Pleasant. Co-founders Dana Romanosky and Leanna Noel built it around one machine, the XFormer, and one idea: small classes, taught well, in a room where everyone belongs. Dana, classically trained and certified since 2012, leads the studio and is our North Star. Leanna still shapes Evolve from behind the scenes and is part of every big decision we make. This month marks three years, and the numbers are bigger than we ever imagined: nearly 60,000 classes taken and more than 3,500 people through the door, most of whom had never touched an XFormer before. Every class is still capped at ten. Here's what this town has taught us.
Come as you are
Some mornings you roll out of bed, pull on whatever's clean, and make it to class with your hair doing whatever it decided to do and hopefully some matching socks. Some mornings you show up in the set you've been saving, ready to conquer the world. Either way, you're in the right place and welcome in our community, on the XFormer right next to each other, getting the same class and doing the same work. Your instructor is watching your form and your breath, and that's it.
We will push you. You'll hear about one more rep, a heavier spring, a longer hold. You'll hear it by name, with a clear cue and a reason, and you'll get a lighter spring the moment your body asks for one. You can leave shaking and still feel like the whole room was on your side. That's the studio we set out to build, and three years in, it's the part we're proudest of.
People come for results and stay for each other
Most people walk in the first time because they want to get stronger, fix their posture, or come back from something. The reason they're still here years later is usually a person: the instructor who remembered their shoulder, the regular who saves them the XFormer by the window, the friend they now meet for coffee after Body Smart.
The numbers tell the same story. 142 clients have taken more than 100 classes at Evolve. 52 have passed 200. Three have passed 500. Thirty-four of them started with us in our first two months, thirteen in our very first week of classes, and every one of the 34 still takes class here today. They've watched this studio grow up around them. They're the ones who greet a first-timer at the door, show her where the grip socks are, and promise the shake gets easier. It doesn't. You just get stronger. We didn't plan for any of that, but we certainly hoped for it. We're grateful for it every week.
Consistency beats intensity
The clients who change the most are the ones who keep coming. One class a week is a great start. Two is where you find your groove. Three is where the real change happens, in your strength, your posture, and the way you feel getting out of bed. Joseph Pilates said 10 sessions to feel the difference, 20 to see it, and 30 to have a new body. Three years in, we'd add one note: the 30 have to keep happening.
It starts with your core
Every class at Evolve opens the same way: a short warm-up, then Opening Core. This is usually the first moment people realize this workout is different. Planks, wheelbarrows, and body saws on one light spring, with the carriage sliding under your hands and nothing holding you steady except you. Most new clients start shaking before that first block is over. Nothing is wrong. That's your deep abdominals, your obliques, and the small muscles along your spine working to keep you stable while the spring keeps tension on everything, with no momentum to help.
Joseph Pilates called that center the powerhouse and believed every movement should start there. We build on that idea. A core that's switched on early lets your legs and arms work harder and cleaner through the rest of class, so we open with it and come back to it before the cool down. The shake you feel in those first minutes follows you through every block after. Our clients named the blog after it.
Ten is the right number
We cap every class at ten. Ten is the number where an instructor can see every body in the room, catch a poor position before it becomes a habit, and change a spring for someone working around an injury. Ten is also small enough that you're missed when you don't show up.
What's next
Lots of good things are on the horizon for Evolve. The newest: starting this fall, you can book private and duet sessions directly in the Evolve app, the most requested change since we opened. You can also now sync your health tracker with the app. More is coming before the end of the year, and members will hear about it first.
Mount Pleasant has more places to take a Pilates class today than it did in October 2023, with a few more coming soon. We think that's good for the town and good for Pilates. We love the variety, and we're happy to be part of your well-rounded routine for years to come. The method and the welcoming room are here to stay. How we teach will keep evolving, the way it has every year since we opened, for a long time to come.
To everyone who has taken a class with us, told a friend about us, or left a review: thank you. You built this studio as much as we did.
