Do You Need to Be in Shape to Start Pilates?

Do you need to be in shape to start Pilates? No. Pilates is how you get in shape, and the XFormer adjusts to whatever shape you’re in on day one. Of the more than 3,500 people who have walked into Evolve Modern Pilates in Mount Pleasant, most had never touched an XFormer before. Many hadn’t worked out in years. Here’s why that’s the right place to start.

The reasons people wait

We hear the same few worries from almost everyone who calls before booking.

“I’m not flexible.” Flexibility comes from Pilates. It builds as your muscles get stronger through their full range, so the stiffness you feel now is a reason to come.

“I’m not strong enough.” Every exercise on the XFormer runs on springs, and springs can be made lighter. If a movement is too much, your instructor changes the spring and you keep going.

“I haven’t worked out in years.” Pilates is low impact, so there’s no jumping, pounding, or heavy lifting to ease into. Many of our longest-standing clients started after a long break.

“I’ll be the only one who can’t keep up.” You won’t be. Every class has people at different levels doing their own version of the same movement, and nobody is watching anyone but their instructor.

How the XFormer meets you where you are

The XFormer has fixed platforms at both ends of the carriage, which gives you something stable to stand on and hold while you learn the moving parts. Each exercise has easier and harder versions. A plank can start on your knees with your hands on the platform and progress, over weeks, to a full plank with your hands on the moving carriage. Same exercise, same class, different starting point.

Your instructor sets you up before class, walks you through the machine, and keeps an eye on you the whole time. Every class at Evolve is capped at ten people, so that attention never gets spread thin.

What the room is like

Come as you are. Some people show up in whatever was clean that morning, and some show up in a brand-new set. Both are in the right place. You’ll hear your name, clear cues, and encouragement to work hard, along with a lighter spring the moment your body asks for one. You can leave shaking and still feel like the room was on your side.

If you’re working around an injury or recovering from surgery, tell your instructor before class, and check with your doctor or physical therapist if you’re still in treatment. Pilates is widely used in rehab settings, and our instructors are trained to modify for backs, knees, shoulders, and more.

Where to start

Our Body Smart class teaches the method at a slower pace and is a great first step. Total Body is all levels too, so if it fits your schedule better, book that. Arrive ten minutes early for your first class so we can check you in, show you around, and set up your XFormer. Grip socks are required; bring your own or grab a pair at the studio.

Joseph Pilates said you’d feel the difference in 10 sessions. You don’t need to be in shape for session one. You just need to show up.
