What Is XFormer Pilates?
If you've heard the word XFormer and weren't sure what it meant — you're not alone. It's one of the most common questions we get at Evolve, and it's a fair one. The fitness world is full of equipment names that don't tell you much. This one is worth understanding.
Here's the honest answer.
It starts with the Reformer
The XFormer is a direct evolution of the Pilates Reformer — the spring-based machine that Joseph Pilates developed over a century ago. The Reformer was revolutionary for its time. It used spring resistance to create controlled, low-impact movement that built strength, improved flexibility, and supported healing. Physical therapists still use it today.
The XFormer takes that foundation and pushes it further.
So what makes the XFormer different?
The XFormer adds fixed large platforms on either end of the frame and two sets of pulleys — changes that open up a much broader range of movement than a traditional Reformer allows. Standing exercises become safer and more dynamic. The spring system creates continuous variable tension, meaning your muscles are working whether you're pushing or pulling, extending or contracting.
The result is a machine that delivers more — more exercise options, more muscle engagement, more intensity — while staying true to the low-impact principles that make Pilates so effective for so many people.
What does a class actually feel like?
A 50-minute XFormer class at Evolve is a full-body workout. You'll move through core work, lower body, and upper body sequences — all connected by your breath and deliberate transitions. There are cardio bursts built in to keep your heart rate up and your body guessing.
It's hard. In the best way. Most people feel muscles they forgot they had. The signature shake — that deep muscle fatigue that tells you something real is happening — shows up whether it's your first class or your fiftieth.
And because the XFormer is spring-based and low-impact, it's genuinely accessible. People recovering from injuries take class alongside athletes. It meets you where you are and challenges you from there.
Is it the same as Lagree or Megaformer?
Close — but not the same. The Lagree method uses a machine called the Megaformer, which shares some design principles with the XFormer. Both are evolutions of the Reformer, both use spring resistance, and both deliver high-intensity low-impact workouts. The XFormer has its own distinct design, spring configuration, and exercise library. At Evolve, we teach the our own method wiht roots in classical pilates but adapted for the XFormer — not Lagree — though clients who've done both often find the transition intuitive.
Why Mount Pleasant chose it
When Dana and Leanna opened Evolve Modern Pilates at 1336 Old Georgetown Road, the XFormer was the only choice. It's the most advanced spring-resistance machine on the market — and the one that best delivers on everything Evolve stands for. Effective, safe, transformative movement for every body.
If you've been curious, this is your sign. Your first class is waiting.
